Constant Cravings? 3 Steps to Address Sugar and Carbs
Food cravings can spring up from roots that range from social to psychological factors. Are carb and sugar cravings screaming for your attention?
While there are many root causes of cravings, address these first:
Cut the sugar and refined carbs for at least 5 days
One physiological factor comes from the gut's microorganisms that feed off of sugar. (These are not the gut bugs we want hanging around!) The more sugar and refined carbohydrates we eat, the more we feed them, and thus the more they "demand" sugar and refined carbs. This demand exacerbates cravings. That’s the bad news.
The good news is when you deprive the sugar-loving microorganisms of their sugar and refined carbs, their population shrinks. You can feel diminished cravings as a result of their shrinking influence after about 3-5 days.
Increase your fiber
Instead of feeding the sugar-loving microbes, feed the good gut bugs. They like to eat fiber! Most people aren’t getting near enough fiber in their diet. I recommend hitting 40 grams of fiber each day. Or in more practical terms, that’s at least 1 serving of whole grains or legumes per day as well as 6 servings of a variety of vegetables and 1-2 servings of fresh fruit.
Examine your diet from a birds eye view
Do you see fiber, quality fat and protein on your plate at each meal? Are you eating enough? Are you hitting your optimal levels of vitamins and minerals from your food?
